Plus, there’s a brand new interview! Here are some highlights:
On her Latina inspiration:
“I was really moved watching ‘West Side Story’ as a young girl and seeing Puerto Ricans star in it. Even though it wasn’t the best depiction of us, they still have the passion and love that I relate to – not to mention the singing and dancing! Rita Moreno became a hero to me.”
On her body’s insecurities:
“Early on, my family really made me love who I was and what I looked like. My body was nothing out of the ordinary in my neighborhood. When I first started on television [as a Fly Girl on ‘In Living Color’], people, and even my own manager at the time, would tell me I had to make all of these changes. But you have to stand up and say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with me or my shape or who I am, you’re the one with the problem!’ And when you can really believe that, all of a sudden other people start believing too.”
On being Latina:
“I love the people that I grew up in, the strength and passion and the heart that we bring to things and then the way I was raised – the intense love we demonstrate.”
On conquering stage fright:
“One day somebody told me I had to perform in front of 35,000 people on the set of ‘Selena.’ I didn’t know how to do it. I just said to myself: Don’t think about it. You can do this and you’ll be great. I walked out onto the stage. And then I did. I’ve been following that rule ever since.”
The issue will hit newsstands on Oct. 29, so make sure you pick up a copy!

Here are excerpts from the interview:
Admitting that her appearance at the birthday party of the president of Turkmenistan earlier this year was a mistake: “I know that being seen as a role model means taking responsibility for all my actions. I am human, and of course, sometimes I make mistakes. But I promise that when I fall, I get back up. When I am wrong, I will learn the lesson and move on to face other challenges. For me, that’s what creating your own life is. Doing your best work while being your best self.”
On not feeling secure about herself until later in life: “It was after I had kids to be honest…The biggest insecurity I had was my singing. Even though I had sold 70 million records, there was this feeling like, I’m not good at this. And while I was married to Marc, he helped me get over it. He kept telling me, ‘You’re the only one holding yourself back from reaching your full potential as a singer. You have to let go’…I was always so insecure and just kind of going along. Then I grew, little by little, and realized, wait a minute, this is not a fluke. I’m not a mistake – I work my ass off. And I know what I’m doing.”
On being the creative force in business meetings: “Everybody in there might be more business-minded, but for me, if I’m talking about marketing or promotion or why a piece of clothing is made, it all comes from an emotion. I’m more of an artist, so when I’m able to use that muscle, I feel like I’m in my element.”
On her relationship with 26-year-old choreographer boyfriend Beau “Casper” Smart: “For me, it’s about having a great partner to walk this life with. I have my own high standards for what I want in a partner and how I want to be treated. I bring a lot to the table. I’m not talking about material things but what I have to offer as a person – love and loyalty and all the things that make a good relationship.”
When she commits to a man, she gives herself completely: “It’s funny, early on with Beau, I remember telling him how I have a real button on being ignored. And he was like, ‘Listen, if somebody ignores you, then forget them. They don’t deserve to have your attention.’ But it’s funny. Sometimes when we don’t get it, we try to get it in a negative way, you know?”
The magazine hits newsstands on September 10, so be on the lookout!
Jennifer Lopez is on the cover of the August issue of W Magazine. Photographed by Mario Sorrenti and wearing a Gucci gown, Jennifer looks like the ultimate Old Hollywood Movie Star.
Here is an excerpt from her interview:
“I was nervous coming here today,” said Jennifer Lopez, as she turned the corner onto a residential street in the Bronx. It was a cool afternoon in late spring, and Lopez was wearing a loose bright pink jogging suit and sequined platform sneakers. She is a kind of physical wonder: small but strong, narrow everywhere except for her famous perfectly round derriere. “This is the house I grew up in,” she said, stopping in front of a white two-story surrounded by an ornate metal gate. It was set apart from the rest of the houses on the block by an alley in the back and a vacant lot next door. Across the street, in a kind of homage to Lopez, there was a banner for the Rising Stars School. “I didn’t go to that school,” Lopez said, still staring at her former home, where she lived with her parents and two sisters. She pointed at a back window that faced the empty lot. “I would look out that window to see if my boyfriend was coming, and then I’d run out the door,” she said, laughing. “I’m the middle sister. All three of us girls shared a room. I was into sports and dancing. I ran track. I have a lot of stamina.” Lopez laughed again. “I was built for the long run.”
